Scratchboard

I first tried scratchboard in 1988 after seeing a fellow artist demonstrating it at a local art show. Scratchboard consists of a backing board with a white clay layer and either black or colored ink on top. Using sharp implements like craft knives, you remove the ink coating revealing the white clay underneath. Very fine lines can be achieved. Unlike pencil drawing where you are adding darkness, with scratchboard you are “bringing out the light”.

Vitreous enamel is glass on metal. I took my first class in the fall of 2018. There are many techniques that can be used to make enamel art, the most basic is to sift powdered glass onto metal shapes (I use copper). The piece is fired in a kiln at 1450 Fahrenheit (790 Celsius) for 2-3 minutes. The glass melts and fuses to the copper for an archival work of art.
